Six ways to color the spiky haired warrior
The set is grouped so that no two pages feel alike. What is going on in these pictures
If your child knows the show they will explain all of this before the first page finishes printing, but here is the short version for everyone else. Goku is a cheerful, endlessly hungry martial artist who trains harder than anyone and would rather make a friend of a rival than beat one. The spiky hair that stands straight up, the glow around him and the cracked ground underfoot all mean the same thing: he has powered up, and he does it in stages, which is why he looks a little different from page to page. The two cupped hands at his hip are the wind up for his signature energy beam. The small yellow cloud is a flying ride only a good heart can sit on. The long red staff stretches to any length he asks for. The seven crystal orbs, each marked with a different number of stars, summon the long wish dragon when they are gathered together, and the four star one is the keepsake he grew up with.
Coloring ideas for orange gis, gold auras and crystal orbs
Two colors carry most of these pages: a strong orange for the uniform and a deep blue for the sash, wristbands and boots, which is why he still reads as himself even in pencil. Keep those big areas flat and even and spend your effort on the small stuff: the yellow boot trim, the knot of the sash and the shading under the jaw. Hair is where you get to choose. Leave it black for the everyday form, or go bright yellow with a white core for the powered up pages, or a pale silver grey for the calm one. Auras look best worked from the outside in: orange at the outer edge, yellow in the middle, and a thin band left white right against his body so he seems to glow rather than sit inside a blob. On the orb pages, lay down orange first, rub a little brown around the rim and leave one small white patch where the light hits, and the glass turns solid. On the flying and kicking pages, color the speed lines and dust a pale grey or blue instead of leaving them white and the whole drawing starts moving. The best page for every age
Toddlers should start with the extra easy sheet: a big smiling face, very thick lines and only a handful of shapes. Kids from about four to nine head straight for the beam, the flying page, the spinning kick and the wish dragon. Older kids and grown-ups tend to pick the star orb mandala, the three panel comic page and the eight bit pixel portrait, which color like a pattern rather than a picture and can eat a whole evening. Running a party? Print a stack of the ready stance page and hand out orange, blue and gold pencils, or print the seven orbs, cut them apart and hide them around the room for the smallest guest to find.
