What colors is the blue hedgehog?
The classic look is bright blue quills, a peach muzzle and arms, green eyes, white gloves, and red sneakers with a white strap, with golden rings scattered around him. The colored example at the top of this page uses exactly that palette, so you can copy it straight off the screen. But these are your pages. Purple quills with orange shoes work just as well, and a whole row of differently colored hedgehogs looks great taped to a wall.
Tips for coloring speed
The speed lines, swirls and motion streaks are the secret weapon on these pages. Leave them white and the drawing looks calm; color them light blue or yellow and the hedgehog suddenly looks like he is moving. Keep the biggest area (the quills) one flat, even blue so the small details pop against it: the shoes, the gloves and the rings. Gold rings love yellow and orange together, with a spot left uncolored for shine. If you color with markers, print on thicker paper (cardstock) so nothing bleeds through; crayons and pencils are happy on plain printer paper.
Which page should you print first?
For toddlers, start with the easy hedgehog: extra-thick lines, big open areas, nothing fiddly. Kids from about four to eight head straight for the action scenes, the big loop, the spring bounce and the skateboard ramp. Older kids and grown-ups usually pick the patterned quills page, which colors like a mandala and can take a whole evening. Running a birthday party? Print a stack of the finish line page and hand out gold and blue pencils.
