Six ways to meet the gingerbread man

The story behind the runaway cookie
The gingerbread man is a folk tale, told long before anyone wrote it down, and the version most children know was printed in an American magazine in 1875. An old woman bakes a cookie, the cookie hops off the tray, and the chase is on: the old man, the old woman, a cow, a horse and half the farmyard all run after him while he sings that nobody can catch him. Then he reaches a river he cannot swim, a fox offers a ride, and the ending depends on who is telling it. Our drawings follow that story rather than any studio's version of it, so the pages double as a story sequence: print the oven, the chase, the fox and the river in order and a child can retell the whole tale from the pictures.
Coloring ideas for gingerbread and icing
Start with the cookie itself, and do not reach for one flat brown. Two or three browns layered over each other, with the lightest kept near the middle of the arms and legs, makes a cookie look baked instead of painted. A warm gold or a soft orange rubbed over the top is the fastest way to get that just out of the oven glow. Then leave the icing white, or very nearly: white gel pen over a colored page works beautifully, and if you only have pencils, simply leaving the icing swirls uncolored with a light grey edge reads as icing straight away. Save your brightest reds, greens and pinks for the gumdrops and candy buttons, three or four bright colors at most, so they pop against all that brown. For a background, a pale blue or a soft mint behind him pushes the warm cookie forward. Markers need thicker paper (cardstock) so they do not bleed through; crayons, pencils and gel pens are happy on plain printer paper. More advice is in our how-to-print guide.
The best page for every age
Toddlers should start with Easy Gingerbread Man: extra thick lines, three fat buttons and two dot eyes, nothing fiddly. Kids from about four to eight usually go straight for the running page, the chase, the gingerbread house and the family of four. Older kids and grown-ups tend to pick the mandala, the zentangle body or the finely iced cookie, which color like a pattern rather than a picture. Baking with a class in December? Print the tray page and the cookie cutter scene as the paper half of the activity, then let each child decorate their cookie on paper before the real ones come out of the oven.
