On the Starting Line

Five ways into the Mushroom Kingdom
The set is grouped so that no two pages feel alike. There is kart racing: the plumber at the wheel on the starting line under a chequered banner, a kart flying off a wooden jump ramp with all four wheels in the air, a hard drift past a banana peel, a three step winners podium under falling confetti and a rainbow road floating in outer space. There are the friends and foes of the kingdom, with Yoshi standing guard over a big spotted egg, Princess Peach in a ruffled gown among the roses of the castle garden and a grumpy little goomba stomping down a brick path. There are power-ups and items for anyone who would rather color objects than characters: the super mushroom, the fire flower in its brick planter, the winking star, the question block spitting coins, a treasure chest spilling gold, a green shell in the grass, a cracked brick wall and a nine square grid of items. There are worlds and levels, a whole tour of them: the lava castle with its drawbridge, the green pipe with a toothy plant leaning out, an underwater stage full of bubbles and coins, a desert pyramid, a stack of cloud platforms, a crooked ghost house, an icy slope with penguins and a jungle hung with vines. Who is who on these pages
If your child knows the games they will name everyone before you finish printing, but here is the short version for the rest of us. The plumber in the cap and dungarees is Mario, and you will find him driving the kart on the starting line, shrunk to a chibi with a wrench in his hand, drawn extra simple for small hands and rebuilt out of pixels on a grid. Yoshi is the friendly green dinosaur, and the spotted egg he is guarding is where more of him comes from. Princess Peach lives in the castle behind the roses and wears the crown. A goomba is the grumpy walking mushroom that will not get out of your way. Everything else on these pages, the coins, the blocks, the pipes, the shells and the power-ups, belongs to the kingdom itself, which is why so many of them make good pages on their own.
Coloring ideas for red caps, green shells and gold coins
Two colors do most of the work here: a strong red and a deep blue for the plumber, kept flat and even so the small things can carry the detail. Save your effort for the white gloves, the brown boots and the moustache. Gold coins and the star look best with yellow laid down first and a little orange rubbed around the rim, with one small patch left white for shine. On the shell, keep the dome a single bright green and change to a warm cream on the rim so it reads as two materials instead of one flat blob. The castle and the pyramid are the pages to be bold on: grey stone is fine, but orange and yellow lava under the drawbridge lifts the whole drawing. On the kart pages, color the smoke and speed lines a pale blue or grey instead of leaving them white and the whole picture starts moving. The mandala, the zentangle star and the color by number mushroom want the opposite approach: pick four colors, repeat them around the rings, and the symmetry does the work for you. Markers need thicker paper (cardstock) so they do not bleed through; crayons, pencils and gel pens are happy on plain printer paper. More advice is in our how-to-print guide.
The best page for every age
Toddlers should start with the extra easy plumber: very thick lines, a few large shapes and nothing fiddly, with the super mushroom and the green shell close behind. Kids from about four to eight go straight for the kart racing set, the ghost house, the ice level with the penguins and the question block. Older kids and grown-ups tend to pick the Mushroom Kingdom mandala, the zentangle star, the nine item grid and the eight bit pixel page, which color like a pattern rather than a picture and can take a whole evening. The color by number mushroom is the one to hand a child who says they do not know what colors to use. Running a party? Print a stack of the starting line page and hand out red, green and gold pencils, or print the item grid, cut the nine squares apart and use them as name cards at the table.
