32 coloring pagesFour animal collections live here: cats, dinosaurs, capybaras and butterflies. The cats go from a kitten curled up asleep to a Maine Coon with lynx-tipped ears and a patchwork calico. Dinosaur fans get the famous names, a roaring T-Rex and a crested Parasaurolophus among them, plus a fossil skeleton set in rock. The capybaras do what capybaras do best: soak in a hot spring with a towel on their heads, nap on a lily pad, ride a duck across the pond. Butterflies lean toward pattern, with monarch, swallowtail and blue morpho wings next to mandala and stained-glass designs.
Matching a page to the child
Each collection keeps one or two pages for the smallest hands. Easy Cat for Toddlers, Easy Stomping Dino, Easy Round Capybara and Chunky Easy Butterfly use extra-thick outlines and only a handful of big shapes. Kids from about four to seven tend to pick the little stories: a cat squeezed into a cardboard box, a dino mom nuzzling her baby, a capybara riding a duck. The busy pages are for older kids and adults. Try the Stained Glass Cat, the Intricate Patterned Butterfly or the Patterned Dinosaur, where every part of the body carries its own fill.
Pages that come with a lesson
A few sheets have something to learn hidden in them. Caterpillar to Butterfly shows the life cycle in four small scenes, and Chrysalis on a Twig zooms in on the stage in the middle. D is for Dinosaur wraps a dinosaur around a capital D with the whole word printed below. The Dinosaur Fossil page draws a skeleton bone by bone, a good start for a talk about how fossils are found. On the Color by Number Cat the sections run from 1 to 12 with no key printed, so have your child choose a color for each number and write the key in the margin before starting.
Crayons and colored pencils are fine on plain printer paper. Markers on the detailed butterflies need something heavier, and our printing guide lists the paper weights that stop bleed-through. Cat lovers can head straight to the cat coloring pages, which include five breed portraits, from a fluffy Persian to a hairless Sphynx.
Which animal coloring pages are easiest for toddlers?
Start with My First Capybara or Easy Round Capybara: one round body, a big smile and thick lines that a chunky crayon can follow. Next, try Easy Stomping Dino and Chunky Easy Butterfly. Each has just a few large shapes, so a two-year-old can fill them without help and finish before losing interest.
